This course is designed for anyone interested in painting portraits in oil, from beginners to confident painters
This course teaches beginners the basics of oil portrait painting and allows more confident painters to strengthen their practice and gain confidence in their portrait painting skills. Learn basic skin tones as well as proportions, shading, composition, and colour. Practice new skills and work in an encouraging and supportive environment. To build confidence and encourage variety, the course will begin by studying images of Masters such as Gwen Johns, Van Gogh, Lucian Freud, John Singer-Sargent, and Frida Kahlo as well as local artists like Rita Angus and Ann Estelle Rice. Work towards creating your own compositions in your chosen style.
About Melissa McDougall:
As an artist, I have had 35-year exhibiting career. My work has been selected for the Adam Portrait Award and the Parkin Drawing prize. I love drawing, photography, and making films. I specialize in painting in oil and would like to teach others the techniques and mindset needed to create good paintings. |
Materials:
Oil Paints- Winsor and Newton is a good mid-range, but any should do. Only 35ml small tubes are needed:
- white
- black
- cadmium red
- yellow, sap green
- cobalt blue
- violet
Small linseed bottle.
At least one filbert brush - size 4.
Small round brush. (2 or 1)
